Abstract
To ensure the success of the forestry recultivation project at the open-cast lignite mine in the Köflach area, an R & D project was initiated by GKB-Bergbau GmbH in collaboration with the Department for Forestry Science and Applied Information Technology of Munich Technological University. The aim is to obtain recommendations concerning "topsoil" design from the starting materials marl, rubble, fly ash and chopped straw available at the site. Various forest plants are undergoing trials. The test covers 22 areas with different substrate mixtures and six species of trees. The initial results after one year of tests are described.
