Abstract

A method of calculating critical shaft velocities, which takes into account gyroscopic effects and shaft and bearing anisotropy, is proposed. The method is based on the use of equations of motion which are written in a rotating frame; this leads to a natural classification of rotational instabilities in forward and backward critical speeds as well as instabilities due to gravity. For illustration, the method is applied to a simple turboalternator group model.
