Abstract

It is well known from the literature that dental implants may be lost due to periimplantitis. To stop the inflammation and to re-establish re-osseointegration, complete decontamination of exposed implant surfaces is required. One of the many applications for which lasers have been proposed in implant dentistry is for the decontamination process. Therefore, since 1999, CO2 laser therapy has been incorporated in the treatment protocol of peri-implant infections. It was seen that CO2 laser decontamination is especially of value in deep, narrow bony defects. Therefore, the authors report on a new classification of peri-implant defects and, accordingly, the treatment process in man. It was concluded that treatment of peri-implantitis could be optimized using a CO2 laser-assisted decontamination. Nevertheless, further studies are required to identify a gold standard in the treatment of peri-implantitis.
