Abstract

This paper describes the conceptual design of an interceptor UAV as an effector of a micro UAV defense system. The interceptor UAV’s mission is to prevent an intruder UAV from entering a defined airspace. The paper describes the integration of the interceptor UAV into a UAV defense system and the conceptual design of the interceptor UAV. The required communication flows for navigation and control of the interceptor are analyzed. A mission profile is established. For the conceptual design the critical design requirements are derived. A weight estimate is done. The weight estimate is combined with a simplified dynamic model of a rotary wing UAV to derive the required thrust per rotor that is required to meet the design requirements.
