Abstract

Within the framework of a research project promoted by AiF (German Federation of Industrial Research Assosiations), a model relating to the transferability of friction stir welding parameters to different materials and processing equipments was developed at iwb at the TU of Munich and at IMWF at the University of Stuttgart. Taking account of the machine stiffness, the dimensions of the welding tools as well as the temperature-dependent material properties, the design of the model permits the near-practical and simple determination of welding parameters for different applications. With the aid of the calculation model and the accompanying experimental investigations, it was also possible to prove that the machine stiffness and the positioning accuracy exert a greater influence when thin semi-finished products and materials with high strengths are joined.
