Abstract

The clinical symptoms in space-occupying processes in the retroperitoneum frequently occur very late, are not pathognomonic and because of their position are only palpable in fewer than 1/3 of the cases. It is thus left to radiology to make a decisive contribution to their diagnostics. Even with an optimistic appraisal of the value of radiological diagnostics (60% positive findings), a precise differentiation is usually impossible. The metastases in the liver, lymph nodes or vertebral column occurring in 30% of malignant retroperitoneal tumors make it necessary to carry out extensive diagnostics. Computer tomography of the retroperitoneal cavity is of exceptional importance for the diagnosis of a pathological condition and in particular also for checks of therapy. With appropriate indication, computer tomography will reduce all previous X-ray diagnostic measures for this region and will thus lead to a shorter stay at the hospital until the diagnosis is made.
