Abstract

Composite structures of steel and filigree concrete elements can be realized utilizing the innovative material Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC). This high-tech construction material allows the production of extreme thin but high-strength elements. Thus, using UHPC the dimensions and the dead weight of composite structures with a given load-bearing capacity can be minimized. Shear connectors with high shear strength and a ductile load-deformation behavior are necessary to connect the UHPC-member with the structural steel. Continuous shear connectors with a clothoidal shape, the so-called modified chlothoid strip (MCL-strip), were chosen for this research. These shear connectors are arranged parallel to the concrete surface and have only a minimum of concrete cover on each side. A series of push-out tests has been conducted to figure out the load bearing capacity and the failure mechanisms for this configuration. Furthermore, preliminary numerical simulations showed good results in comparison with the physical tests.
