Abstract

Owing to its distinct non-contact and oil-free characteristics, squeeze-film air bearing can be introduced to satisfy ultra-precision, low wear, and oil-free requirements. Since the position can be affected by the pressure distribution between each pad and shaft and the pressure can be changed by controlling the vibration of the pad, the biggest advantage of three-pad air journal bearing lies in the ability of precision spindle position control. The mechanism of pressure generation of squeeze film is investigated at first. In order to acquire an optimal structure, the comparison of the floating performance of three- and four-pad squeeze-film air journal bearings is conducted. In the end, parametric analyses of the effects of the amplitude of pads and rotation speed of the rotor on the bearing force are investigated. The predictions reveal that the four-pad bearing has a higher load capacity than the three-pad bearing.
