Commensurate-incommensurate transition of cold atoms in an optical lattice

Abstract

A commensurate Mott state was realized in dilute 1D Bose-Einstein condensates already with an arbitrary weak lattice potential. This observation provides a new and experimentally accessible tool for the quantitative characterization of 1D atomic gases in the strongly correlated "Tonks gas" limit.
