Abstract

Since the introduction of fiber to the home (FTTH) services based on 1Gbps passive optical network (PON), the demand for higher speed PON has been increasing due to huge demand for broadband services. 10 Gbps PON has been launched and 40 Gbps PON2 has been standardized to meet this demand. Recently, emerging applications such as 5G mobile front haul (MFH) and mobile back haul (MBH) require higher speed PONs. For 5G MFH/MBH networks, it will require greatly increased capacity of more than 100 Gbps. In this paper, we review the recent progress of such 100 Gbps class coherent PON technology. Coherent 100 Gbps/λ wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) PON system will be investigated to achieve practical WDM-based quadric phase shift keying (QPSK) coherent PON system with dual polarization (DP-QPSK).
