Abstract

Separation of the dispersed phase is in most cases an essential step of processes involving liquid-liquid systems, such as e. g. in liquid-liquid extraction or separation of oil from waste water. Coalescence of drops is strongly inhibited by surface active agents. In this work, drop coalescence is investigated on a trickling film flowing down an inclined plate. The surface of the trickling film is being constantly renewed and surfactants are washed onto the horizontal interface. These experiments show that, in contrast to horizontal interfaces, short coalescence times are possible in the case of inclined trickling films. The coalescence process is modelled with the results showing a qualitative agreement with experimental data.
