Circular dichroism of helically arranged molecules in cholesteric phases

Abstract

It is demonstrated that the helical arrangement of dye molecules dissolved in cholesteric phases leads to a strong circular dichroism in the wavelength range of the solute absorption bands. This effect yields a simple method to determine relative polarization directions of optical transitions.
