Abstract

The longstanding issue of the missing repulsion in the s-wave pion-nucleus potential that can be at least partially resolved by taking into account the explicit energy dependence of the pion self-energy and the gauge invariant incorporation of electromagnetic interactions was demonstrated. It was clarified that the energy dependence effects in the pion polarization operator can be interpreted in terms of an in-medium reduction of the pion decay constant, entering in an equivalent, energy independent optical potential.
