Abstract

After stimulation by appropriate particulate or soluble stimuli, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) react with the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), in a 'respiratory burst'. The measurement of chemoluminescence (CL) is a new and sensitive tool to quantify PMN respiratory burst activity. The production of ROS is an important mechanism in antimicrobial host defense and may be modulated by mediators involved in transplant rejection, eg, arachidonic acid metabolites. The cytotoxic effect of ROS is thought to be responsible for neutrophil-mediated endothelial damage. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of acute renal allograft rejection on the respiratory burst activity of peripheral blood PMN in an animal model.
