Abstract
Electric charging of clean and PAH-coated carbon particles by intense laser light pulses in the visible spectral range between 450 and 540 nm is demonstrated for the first time. Preliminary model calculations are presented to account for the experimentally observed degree of charging of carbon particles as a function of applied laser fluence and particle size. We also discuss some loss mechanisms which might reduce the effectiveness of this technique.
