Abstract

For the first time, this study provides strong evidence that hepatocytes express functional Fas-ligand protein after orthotopic liver transplantation in specific allogeneic strain combinations. Fas-L expression correlates with intra-graft elimination of alloreactive T cells and subsequent tolerance induction. Thus, detection of Fas-L offers the possibility to be used as a marker protein for tolerized liver transplants.
