Abstract
Two β-glucosidase genes, designated bglA and bglB, were isolated from a gene bank of Clostridiumthermocellum DSM 1237. The coding sequences for bglA and bglB were located on non-homologous DNA fragments of 3.2- and 3.4-kb, respectively. Both genes direct in Escherichiacoli the synthesis of cytoplasmic β-glucosidases, which differ with respect to substrate specificity and temperature profile. The properties of the bglA-encoded β-glucosidase A closely resemble that of a β-glucosidase previously isolated from C.thermocellum cultures.
