Abstract

Current cost, performance, and durability issues associated with polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC) membranes and catalysts were presented. While Pt catalysts are very stable at the low electrode potentials occurring at the anode electrode, Pt sintering and dissolution and carbon corrosion pose significant concerns at the high electrode potentials occurring in the cathode electrode. Pt instability may limit the operation of PEFC in realistic automotive applications to 80°C, with a few allowable excursions to higher temperatures in the vicinity of 100°C.
