Abstract
Discusses the two processes of air slot aeration, the behaviour of the pumping device (turbulent jet/air interface) and the air system. Shows that for a given air entrainment the pressure distribution can be calculated stepwise. Considers the mechanism of air entrainment of aerators to be shear dominated and therefore proposes entrainment rate relations which depend on the jet length. Compares calculated air entrainment rates with prototype measurements for various dams. Suggests model design criteria to ensure scale effects are negligible. Notes the effect of Weber number on air entrainment and indicates how an optimum aerator shape can be chosen.
