Abstract
This largely exegetical paper gives an analysis of the section in Bolzano's Theory of Science in which he outlines his theory of signs. Roman Jakobson praised Bolzano as a pioneer of semiotics because of this very section that he found "overwhelmingly rich in ideas". We discuss Bolzano's text against the background of the semiotics and hermeneutics of 18th century German enlightement and of post-Fregean philosophy of language.
