Abstract
The (eco)toxicological consequences of pyrolysis and thermal treatment are poorly understood. Therefore, a variety of bioassays was developed to investigate gaseous, liquid and solid emissions from thermal and pyrolytic processes, which enable us to assess emissions or hazardous solids like fly ash, technical sludges etc. The biological endpoints are chosen according to their importance of known biological targets in order to develop an endpoint oriented archive of toxicological impact on the environment. First targets are mutagenicity, cytotoxicity, endocrine disruption, dioxin like response as well as apoptosis and disruption of the genom. The assays were applied to samples like fly ash, emissions from incineration, smelting processes and other residues. The toxicity of unknown compounds i.e. considering dioxin like response in emissions does not exceed one order of magnitude which is reassuring.
