Abstract
Cornus sanguinea L. is a common tall-shrub with a wide distribution in Europe. This article reviews the literature on morphology, physiology, reproduction, establishment, community context and distribution of the species, i.e. plant traits contributing to the abundance of C. sanguinea, and to its success and persistence in the cultural landscape of central Europe.
