Abstract

The use of stress measurements based on X-ray diffraction in lifetime prediction has up to now yielded variable results. It has been found that a good correlation of residual stress to the previous cyclic loading can be obtained by introducing a certain switching-off mode. Particularly significant curves of residual stress vs. cycle number were found for Ck45 carbon steel specimens tested under stresses lower or higher than the fatigue strength. The investigation shows that predictions of lifetime under cyclic loading by X-ray stress measurement might be possible in special cases.
