Abstract

There is strong evidence, that physical inactivity and obesity are important modifiable risk factors of type2 diabetes. Several prevention programmes have shown, that type2 diabetes can be prevented by changes in the lifestyles of highrisk subjects. Benefits of lifestyle interventions alsowere observed for patients with type2 diabetes. Nevertheless, most of patients with type2 diabetes are inactive. The aim of a longitudinal trial was to investigate the efficacy of a onetime education programme of physical activity (DiSko - how diabetes patients take part in physical activity) on long-term physical activity, physical performance, health status and quality of life, and to verify the practicability of this programme in the daily routine of diabetes care. The physical activity, of those completing the DiSko programme, increased from 5.9±6.2h/week to 9.8±8.0h/week (p<0.001) combined with an improvement in the 6min-walk-test (50±119m, p<0.001; controls: 6±155m). The averageweight loss was 1.5±4kg (p=0.008) and the subjective assessment of physical fitness was better (p<0,05) in patients with DiSko programme. 12000patients with type2 diabetes have received the DiSko programme until now, and 80% of the instructors gave good or very good ratings for the practicability of the programme. The results show, that a one-time physical activity education programme motivates most patients with type2 diabetes to exercise longtime and emphasizes this programme in daily practice.
