Abstract
This paper reviews the revised West German standards for concrete additives which appeared in April 1983. In these standards the additives are better matched to natural conditions, and a distinction is made between three different requirement gradations. The author then discusses the progress made in the preparation of sand. Using classifier tanks, up to nine grain sizes can be separated and grouped into one screening line. Strength tests on granular materials are less important than they used to be, since it was established that the properties of these materials can be significantly affected by their method of preparation. By means of air-pore-forming additives and consistent monitoring of the air pore content frost damage on concrete pavements can, for all practical purposes, be avoided.
