Abstract

Synthetic materials are commonly used for the production of furnishings of buildings and means of transportation. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) can be used for and are generated during production of synthetic materials. Later those materials can emit VOC into ambient air. An important group of VOC are amines. Because of their odouractivity there is an interest in determination methods for amines in air. The method described is based on acidic sampling of primary, secondary and tertiary amines followed by determination of the quaternary ammonium salts of amines by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS).
