Abstract
Regarding extreme flood events, dyke failures are a key factor for risk assessment. In such an occurrence it is extremely important for the population and the emergency services to estimate the spread of the flood behind a dyke break. In the context of the research project "German Research Network Natural Disasters (DFNK)" it was one of the tasks to estimate the impacts of dyke failures on flood propagation and on the affected floodplain areas. This paper presents the ArcView extension FloodArea as a simple and reliable tool to determine the extension of flooded areas in time and the dependability of the applied model by means of a comparative computation.
