Abstract
Signal-to-noise power ratios can be determined in the time or in the frequency domain. The results have of course to be the same, which however is not guaranteed as the equations in question do not necessarily correspond to each other. To avoid this potential problem a consistent set of equations is given for continuous and discrete signals as well as for the time and frequency domain. Usage of the algorithms is shown by an example. The calculated signal-to-noise ratio can be taken to characterize analog sensors by the effective number of bits or by channel capacity. The detectivity of infrared radiation sensors can be presented as a function of frequency with the reported equations.
