Abstract
Young athletes are often affected by injuries to the biceps tendon anchor. The etiology, diagnostics and treatment modalities of these injuries of the superior labrum from anterior to posterior (SLAP) are discussed controversially. Furthermore, SLAP lesions are often associated with concomitant pathologies, which increases the difficulty of linking the symptoms to the pathology of the biceps anchor. In cases of isolated SLAP lesions, conservative treatment is often initially chosen; however, it is associated with high failure rates. Surgical treatment of SLAP lesions in young athletes entails arthroscopic SLAP repair or debridement of the SLAP complex with tenodesis of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT). Due to unsatisfactory return to sport rates, especially in overhead athletes, primary tenodesis of the LHBT is increasingly being recommended even in young athletes. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the relevant anatomy, pathogenesis, diagnostics and treatment of SLAP lesions.
