Abstract
Objectives: To describe physicians accredited for the 'Modellvorhaben Akupunktur der Ersatzkassen' with regard to characteristics of structural and general process quality. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to the participating physicians 6 months after the start of the 'Modellvorhaben' to record demographical data, establishment of practice, number of patients, acupunctural qualification, and main focus regarding indications and methods during the previous year. The data were analysed for all physicians as well as stratified by acupunctural qualification (A- or B-diploma) and specialisation (general practitioners; orthopaedists; others). Results: 5,217 (57 %) of 9,182 physicians returned the questionnaire (age 46 years (median); 64 % males; 28 % with B-diploma). Fifty-one percent were general practitioners, 18 % orthopaedists. Physicians used acupuncture since 7 years (median), treated on average 5 % of all patients visiting their practice with acupuncture and spent 10 % of their therapeutic work on it. Microsystems were used by 87 %. Physicians with B-diploma applied a wider variety of acupuncture techniques and used naturopathic therapies, homeopathy and Chinese herbal therapy more often. Orthopaedists did not differ in qualification from other specialists but applied a lower variety of acupuncture techniques. Conclusions: Stratification by acupuncture qualification and specialisation, respectively, showed considerable differences in structural and general process characteristics.
