Abstract
The performance and cost effectiveness of the permanent way depend in large measure on the long-term behavior of the rail fastenings and on the settling of the ballast bed. This article presents examples of research findings on the fastening of continuously welded rail and the testing of rail clamps, as well as on various methods of track stabilization, such as the use of a larger rail profile or of larger sleepers, or the placing of a subsurface protective layer under the ballast.
