Abstract

In the meantime, arthroscopy has become an established procedure for the diagnosis and treatment of afflictions of the knee joint. Its decisive advantage is to be seen in the markedly shorter recovery time vis-a-vis open surgery on the knee. Despite the fascinating possibilities offered by this procedure, it should not be undertaken too lightly, since it has developed from a method originally described as 'no problem surgery', to one with a low complication rate, but with quite major complications. For this reason, for purely diagnostic purposes, we try to make do with non-invasive methods. For meniscus resection, meniscus suturing, loose bodies in the joint, plica excision and osteochondrosis dissecans, however, the advantages of the arthroscopic approach predominate.
