The future Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) will rely on the deployment of uniform antenna arrays at the base station. These will facilitate the distinction of spatially separated signal sources by shaping a beampattern resulting in improved spectral efficiency and consequently in increased system capacity. Interpolating constrained beamforming algorithms play an important role in this context. They determine the optimal shape of the beampattern which should be adapted to the particular user distribution. The calculation of the beampattern is based on the estimation of the directions of arrival (DOA) of the signals which are determined in a preceding DOA-estimation step. With the assumption of constraints the behavior of the beampattern is fixed in several points. However it has shown that the beampattern may express high dynamics under certain conditions. In the presence of DOA-estimation errors this may lead to a decreased signal-to-interference-ratio (SIR). This article presents a detailed analysis of the existing methods and of the occuring factors influencing dynamics.
