Reports a series of empirical comparisons of several well-known algorithms. In the following section a general classification of the various types of algorithm is given - accompanied by a short description of the respective basic concepts. The third section describes the comparison itself and points out the main findings. Criteria for evaluating and comparing different algorithms are included. Two examples illustrate the influence of traffic volume and detector spacing. The last section suggests an incident detection scheme using a combination of different algorithms. Concludes with a discussion of remaining problems and a description of future work in the field of incident detection. -from Authors
