Abstract

Conventional manual transmissions have the advantage of high efficiency at low production costs, while the customer has to accept a trade-off concerning comfort. To compensate this disadvantage one solution could be automated manual transmissions, although there is still the disadvantage of a driving power interruption during the shifting procedure with this transmission type. This paper proposes a new concept of an automated 6-gear manual transmission which tries to reduce this disadvantage by a considerable shortening of the shifting time through an alternative gear alignment and innovative electric actuators. Additionally the efficiency is increased furthermore by the use of low-loss gears and a layout on just 2 shafts, while the axial space is still comparable to 3-shaft gearboxes which are in mass-production now. This is possible through the use of convoluted synchro-mesh systems by which the necessary axial space is decreased.
