Abstract

This paper presents an approach of the concept and implementation for an automated emergency power supply for long-lasting and large-scale power outages. The research setup is composed of a run-of-river power plant as an island grid-forming unit and a drinking water supply as critical infrastructure in a southern German grid area. The general approach for the (partial) automation as well as the key criteria for the development are described. Requirements for the operation of the local islanded grid and for the leading power plant in particular are discussed. Lessons learned from the implementation of automation and results gained from several field test are elaborated and with measurements data exemplified. Adjustments to the control of the given constellation, both those that have already been implemented and those that are still pending, are presented. Additionally, a monitoring and estimation tool approach for islanded grid operation is introduced.
