Abstract

The combination of two power sources - hybrid transmission with internal combustion engine (ic-engine) and small electric engine - with a wide ranged continuously variable transmission enables significant reduction of fuel consumption at constant power requirements as well as at the ECE-cycle. The fuel saving is accomplished by avoiding the partial load areas with high specific fuel consumption (city traffic) and by reducing and optimal adjusting the engine speed at long distance driving (requires extended, continuously variable over-drive). The small electric engine is used as driving power source at low power requirement as well as electric generator and starter of the ic-engine. An additional weight of the vehicle is only caused by the battery. The battery is not tasked for long distance driving. The fuel tank supplying the ic-engine is the energy source for this. While the ic-engine running the battery is charged permanently. Additional charging from the mains is not necessary (autark hybrid) but, however, possible. The autark hybrid is the power train for a universal vehicle able to drive in inner city areas with zero emission and is also suited for long distance driving. The autark hybrid replaces the development of a pure electric driven vehicle, that as only 'third car' means an additional use of raw material and energy in production and more needed parking space and for that reason represents no satisfactory solution to nowadays traffic and environment problems.
