Abstract
At time being outsourcing of value adding activities is intensively discussed in producing companies. Nevertheless studies report trends in the opposite direction as well. Insourcing of value adding activities is practised in case the positive effects expected from outsourcing are not accomplished. Which could be the causes for unsuccessful outsourcing? Why can not the expectations to outsourcing be achieved in the operative practice? Can failures in terms of planning and realisation of outsourcing projects be identified? - This article clarifies, analyses and recommends how to cope with this problem. First current data concerning outsourcing are mentioned and chances as well as risks of outsourcing are derived from these facts. Following the identification of core competences and the "make or buy analysis" are introduced as approaches for decision support. Practical experiences in the preparation and realisation of outsourcing projects together with recommendations how to act complement this survey.
