Abstract

In two different experiments with 15 and 11 subjects, the strike notes of 17 and 137 historical church bells were aurally determined. With 3% of bells, no significant strike note was found. With 69%, there was a significantly dominant strike note which was unambiguous with respect to musical tone category though not necessarily with respect to octave position. An objective determination of the strike notes was also carried out identifying correctly 79% of the 137 bells with musical category of the strike notes.
