Abstract
Competitiveness is the catchword of today. In many cases, the mere mention of the concept is enough to inhibit any discriminating discussion. This article outlines the multiplicity and uncertainty of the concept of (regional) competitiveness. On the basis of an overview of the recent literature and empirical results the author distinguishes three levels on which regional competitiveness can be considered. Finally, on the basis of the concept of protagonist-orientated milieu-networks, the paper presents an ad hoc estimation of the extent to which regional competitiveness can be influenced.
