Abstract
Background: Aeroallergens are relevant eliciting factors of atopic eczema. This article focuses on a method used for the diagnosis in patients with suspected allergy to aeroallergens such as house dust mite, cat dander or pollen. Methods: The atopy patch test (APT) is an epicutaneous patch test with allergens known to elicit IgE-mediated reactions, and the evaluation of eczematous skin lesions. Clinical covariates of the APT were investigated. Results and conclusions: APT reactivity correlates with skin prick test results and the presence of specific IgE. APT gave the most specific results with regard to clinical history as compared to the classical methods. The APT may give additional information on the clinical relevance of aeroallergen sensitization.
