Abstract

BSE affected and healthy control animals have been genotyped at two indel polymorphisms in the promoter region of the prion protein gene (PRNP) on BTA 13 and at 38 SNPs in the extended HEXA region on BTA 10. For the PRNP region, significant influences on the BSE susceptibility could be identified in three of four investigated cattle populations. For the HEXA region, a rare BSE protecting haplotype was found to be associated with BSE in one of the two investigated populations.
