Abstract

First of all the concept of assembly-oriented design is explained in some detail. Various known methods of assembly-oriented design and their limits are discussed. Assembly simulation is presented for the purpose of supporting assembly-oriented design and described by way of examples. In order to demonstrate the possibilities of process simulation, assembly processes are structured hierarchically into three levels of complexity. Process models, which are used by both planners and designers, are presented for the shop, cell and component levels. Finally an outlook is given at other possibilities of integration.
