Abstract
The relations between quality and quantity of fat intake and defined clinical situations have been examined in numerous epidemiological and clinical studies. Most of the studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between the amount of fat consumed and the incidence or, respectively, prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and various cancer diseases. On account of the increasing popularity of confectionery products as snacks between meals or as energy supplies for sports activities, the question arises of whether and to what extent confectionery products may be considered as the vehicle of increased fat intake. Under consideration of the data from the NVS/VERA study, the total intake of fat (3.7 g/day) from confectionery products is not relevant for the average German population. However, the intake of fat from confectionery products may be of increasing importance for groups of people with an extraordinary high consumption of confectionery products. In these cases, especially in the presence of metabolic risk factors, more attention should be directed not only to the differing fat content but also to the differing qualities of the fatty acids in confectionery products.
