title = "ASCAT - Advanced wind scatterometer",
abstract = "The Advanced Wind SCATterometer (ASCAT) is an instrument for ocean wind speed measurement intended as a follow-on of the ERS-1 AMI Scatterometer. While compatible in measurement principle (beam direction and operating frequency), it exhibits superior system performance in terms of coverage (double swath) and radiometric performance. The novel measurement principle of ASCAT was presented at the IGARSS 90 conference. This paper focuses on the work which is currently being carried out under a POEM- 1 Preparatory Programme ESA Phase B Contract. Design aspects, performance tradeoffs and calibration issues are addressed. Special topics comprise the system architecture and the definition of subsystem characteristics as well as the optimization of operational and design pararneters with respect to system performance. Calibration is discussed in relation to the ground processing. This covers both internal calibration (on-board measurement of power-gain product) and external calibration (in flight determination of antenna gain patterns).",
