Abstract

For a long time sports were rather discouraged for arthritis patients. Nowadays a differentiated counseling is indispensable since for many patients the wish to participate again in sport activities plays an important role. This is because quality of life is often equated to quality of movement. On account of the deficits in maximum strength and endurance power that have arisen in the course of the joint arthritis, a targeted training should be initiated as early as possible. By means of the therapeutic approaches provided by suitable types of sports, abrupt loads can be better absorbed due to the higher joint stability and joint alignment of the trained musculature with good neuromuscular control. Preoperative physiotherapy has a positive impact on movement and the ability to overcome pain and can thus help to postpone surgery for up to four years. Knee and hip exercise groups have shown a very good acceptance and are in high demand. There are signs that knee and hip exercise groups will become established nationwide for secondary prevention as has been the case for many years for coronary heart diseases.
