Abstract
Approximation methods for designing multicomponent rectification are based on the assumption of a pseudobinary mixture equivalent to the multicomponent mixture, on empirical correlations, or on analytical approximation equations which can be solved with a minimum of computation. The different possibilities are shown by describing a few selected methods and their limitations in separating a feed stream into two product streams. Determination of volatilities, selection of key components, and component distribution in the products are discussed and application of the methods to columns with side streams is briefly sketched.
