Abstract

This chapter covers the fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation (i.e., light in the visible and ultraviolet regime) with solid matter interaction in general and special emphasis on optical phenomena at the nanoscale. Three different fields in nanoscale photonics are introduced. These are optical processes, confinement of matter, and confinement of radiation. The specific properties of bionanocomposites on the nanoscale with regard to nanoscale absorption processes of electromagnetic radiation such as photoswitches and quantum dots are discussed. Subsequently, the emission characteristics are outlined, focusing on bionanocomposites with lasing properties (conventional and random lasing) and on organic light-emitting diodes. Finally, the generation of structural colors from ordered and disordered bionanocomposite architectures in combination with additional photo-responsive phases are covered.
