Abstract

The combination of laser based ionization techniques with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS), which represents a highly selective analytical technique for selective real-time, on-line monitoring of trace substances, was discussed. The compact and mobile single photon ionization (SPI)-TOFMS analytical instruments and on-line sampling concepts were applied for on-line analysis of organic pollutants in the flue gas of combustion chambers at industrial incineration plants. On-line measurements in combustion chambers were performed with two newly designed laser mass spectrometers. It was found that in the investigated region of the combustion chambers the formation of pollutants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) or NO occurred.
