Abstract
Total cross sections, angular distributions and polarization observables for the process pp → ΛΛ and pp → ΛΣ° are analysed in a boson exchange model on one hand, and in a model based on quark-gluon exchange mechanisms on the other hand. A realistic treatment of strongly absorptive baryon-antibaryon distortions in the initial and final states turns out to be crucial. Once these are properly treated, the low energy observables can be described successfully in either model: meson exchange and quark-dynamical models turn out to be indistinguishable.
